About Me

I have loved photography from an early age starting with a simple fixed lens camera when I was 12 years old.

This taught me the importance of selecting the right film speed for the weather conditions and subject matter and has given me a thorough understanding of the exposure triangle comprising shutter speed – aperture – and sensor sensitivity. I used a Kodak disc camera for a while, fascinated by the compactness of the equipment but always disappointed by the picture quality, which isn’t unsurprising since the negative was only 10mm x 8mm.

My parents bought me a Canon AE1 for my 21st birthday and from that moment I was hooked on the quality and flexibility of an SLR.

Of course, though, the best camera is one you use no matter what it is, and modern phones can capture amazing images. Having great equipment is pointless if you don’t use it, and when you do it is patience and determination and above all, the artistic flair that makes a good photograph truly amazing.

I trained as an Engineering Geologist and have had a successful career in geotechnical engineering, which has allowed me to finance my hobby as an amateur photographer and travel a fair amount to give me the opportunity of capturing wonderful wildlife and amazing landscapes. My career has, however, been quite intense and generally poor in spare time, so bring on retirement!

I have arranged my favourite images into portfolios that reflect my interests: Wildlife, British Butterflies – a childhood passion, Geology – well, of course, Travel, Landscape, Astrophotography – a very new and developing hobby, and Life – to capture everything that doesn’t fit in the others!

I must thank my long-suffering family who has had to put up with me dragging kilos of equipment around on holidays and incessantly stopping to take photographs.

I hope that you enjoy the selection of images presented on this website. If you do and would like to download and use an image, please contact me to request permission.

Thank you!
